Watersports

The Camel Estuary is a great place for water skiing, either on your own boat, through the Rock Sailing and Ski Club, or through the Camel Ski School. Most skiers start from Rock, where the necessary permit may be purchased from the RS&WSC on the quay, or from the Rock Beachmaster on the Quay.

The Rock Sailing Club also hosts daily sailing races during the two weeks of Camel Week and Junior Camel Week in the summer, plus sailing every week, in your own boat, through the summer season. Or you can visit the offices at the pontoon of the Camel School of Seamanship, where you can hire a boat or have sailing lessons.

Padstow and Rock and Port Isaac have Gig Rowing Clubs where you can enjoy the exercise of a trial session. Sea Kayaks can be rented from Padstow, Wadebridge or Port Gaverne.

Fishing trips can been arranged from Ferry Point in Rock and from Padstow. These trips hunt for mackerel, bass and even shark. Many people also enjoy rod fishing from the cliffs at the mouth of the estuary and from the beaches during the rising tides.

There are frequent dive trips arranged for qualified divers, from Rock, to the wrecks and reefs outside the estuary. The waters are very clear, but not suitable for beginners.

The centre for surfing and bodyboarding is Polzeath, which is only 10 minutes drive from Rock. Here you can park on the beach - subject to tides - and use your own boards, or rent boards and wetsuits from the several outlets on and around the beach. Polzeath can be very crowded in the summer season, but early morning and later tides provide a quiter time. Our favourite surfing is during september and October, when the water is warm and the atlantic storms can produce some exciting waves. There are daily surf reports available from Anns Cottage shop on 01208 862162 and a webcam - to show the beach and wave conditions.

Wind surfing and kite surfing are enjoyed from Daymer Bay beach where the combination of clean wind and Atlantic rollers provide a thrilling spectacle for onlookers. Park in Daymer Bay car park and rig the kit on the top of the beach. For beginers, the more sheltered areas near Ferry Point and Porthilly beach are a better starting point.
